Our Corporate Social Responsibility

We’re a responsible company and every decision we make is with a mindful effort to do better for our planet and people.

Made to last

Fast fashion and throwaway culture aren't our style. We make our sofas to last, and we’re always working to improve the longevity of our products through componentry research and technological innovation. We always have, and always will, make everything here in the UK.

Sustainably sourced materials

From the feathers in our scatter cushions to the timber in our frames, our goal is for the materials we use to be certified as responsibly sourced. For example, all the timber we use is FSC accredited, meaning it’s sourced legally, ethically and sustainably. We’re one of the first in our industry to achieve this accreditation, and we continue to set a high standard when it comes to the materials we use.

Minimising carbon emissions

The future of our planet matters. That’s why we work consistently to reduce our carbon emissions, from recycling to powering our factories through renewable organic materials.

In 2018 we introduced our very first biomass machine, which converts our offcuts of wood into fuel. We now have three biomass machines, which have successfully reduced our carbon emissions. Innovation is a core pillar at Whitemeadow, and sustainable thinking is embedded into every step forward we take.

Reducing our energy consumption

We take the time to investigate ways in which we can track and reduce our energy consumption as we scale effectively. In May 2023, we implemented a series of energy reduction programmes covering various initiatives across all of our sites. We’re pleased to say that these successfully reduced our energy consumption the following year by approximately 29%.

This is a massive achievement which has inspired us to further investigate how to continue moving forward in the right direction.

Improving our packaging

We’re finding new ways to reduce the impact of our packaging processes. In 2020 we made positive improvements to our plastic packaging, using a new material made up of 30% post-consumer waste that is 100% fully recyclable. This means that since 2020, we’ve reduced our impact on landfill and oceans by 30%. From 2024, we’ve increased the post-consumer waste percentage from 30% to 50% as we continue to strive for improvements.

Conducting responsible reports

We'll always embrace reports, statements and policies on important matters as a responsible employer and business.

Giving back to our local community

At Whitemeadow, we want to become a force for good. Driving positive social impact means a lot to us, so we do what we can, together, for our community. We’ve partnered with our local Salvation Army, a leading charity in the UK working to support real people with real struggles. From loneliness within the elderly community, to stocking foodbanks and gifting children less fortunate at Christmas time. We support them throughout the year, checking in regularly to see how we can best help - whether that’s through fundraising activities or volunteering our time.

Paving the way for future generations

We’re actively working to create a pipeline of opportunity for the future generation of furniture makers. Our in-house sewing academy has evolved to an industry leading standard, training and qualifying sewing machinists with modern upholsterer qualifications. We provide placement year roles to offer university students the chance to gain valuable experience within our design and development studio. We’re also members of the Furniture Makers’ Company charity, which supports the furniture industry workforce.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

01

Research & Trend Analysis

Every collection starts with an in-depth trend analysis, exploring both upholstery and the wider interior landscape. We believe in product with a purpose, and we work hard to identify gaps and opportunities whilst remaining in touch with the market. From colour analysis to fabric and shape evaluation, we always have our finger on the pulse when it comes to the latest trends.

02

Commercially Designed

Our talented team of Designers always aim to inspire, curating designs that work hard for you and your customers. We’re creative, flexible, and we sweat the small stuff for you - from the perfect arm height to the exact curvature of each cushion.

03

Industry Leading Prototyping

Prototyping is a fundamental part of our design and development process. We evaluate our designs in incredible detail, making considered refinements until we’re ready to sign off the final product. Having the facilities in-house to transform our concepts into samples gives us great flexibility, allowing us to work with agility and pace.
